Spain beat Italy 4-2 on penalties on Sunday to reach the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals and in so doing broke a number of painful hoodoos. Although Gianluigi Buffon saved from Daniel Güiza, Spain Goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved penalties from Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Di Natale before Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas buried the winning spot-kick after the match had ended 0-0 after extra-time.
Without playmaker Andrea Pirlo, who was suspended against Spain, and captain Fabio Cannavaro - the heart of the team - Italy were bereft of creativity and fight, surrendering meekly after a turgid 120 minutes of football and some poor penalties in the shoot-out.

Germany progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship for the first time since 1996 as goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack secured a 3-2 victory over Portugal in Basel.
